eBay or Amazon? Time-Sensitive Retail Purchases via Auctions
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider a population of buyers who have unit demand for a homogeneous good, and only differ in terms of how soon they need to purchase it. These buyers have access to a stochastic stream of second-price auctions, as well as a retail outlet that can be used at any time. We characterize the equilibrium bidding dynamics, showing that bidders steadily raise their reservation price as they approach their deadline. This market produces a considerable degree of dispersion in auction revenue. Surprisingly, extending the buyers’ deadlines actually increases expected revenue and the fraction of buyers using the retail outlet. JEL Classifications: C73, D44, D83

Last-Minute Bidding and the Rules for Ending Second-Price Auctions: Evidence from eBay and Amazon Auctions on the Internet
Auctions on the Internet provide a new source of data on how bidding is in uenced by the detailed rules of the auction. Here we study the second-price auctions run by eBay and Amazon, in which a bidder submits a reservation price and has this (maximum) price used to bid for him by proxy. That is, a bidder can submit his reservation price (called a proxy bid) early in the auction and have the r...
متن کاملHard and Soft Closes: a Field Experiment on Auction Closing Rules
The growth of auctions on the Internet raises new theoretical questions, provides a wealth of data on bidding behavior in auctions, and presents new opportunities for running experiments in the field. The present paper reports the results of a field experiment on the effects of closing rules on auction outcomes. Different auction sites have adopted different closing rules. On eBay, auctions hav...

The recent consumer-to-consumer (C2C) Internet auction boom at eBay, Yahoo, Amazon, and other sites has added new theoretical challenges to the science of auctions. This paper uses experiments with economically-motivated human subjects to measure the operational efficiency of decentralized Internet auction mechanisms as they compare to centralized double auction mechanisms. Subjects are recruit...
متن کاملA Test of the Revenue Equivalence Theorem Using Field Experiments on eBay∗
We conducted 80 auctions on eBay. Forty of these auctions were for various popular music CDs while the remaining 40 auctions were for video games for Microsoft’s Xbox gaming console. The revenue equivalence theorem states that any auction form having the same effective reserve price yields the same expected revenue. The effective reserve price on eBay consists of three components: the opening b...
متن کاملLate and multiple bidding in second price Internet auctions: Theory and evidence concerning different rules for ending an auction
In second price internet auctions with a fixed end time, such as those on eBay, many bidders ‘snipe’, i.e., they submit their bids in the closing minutes or seconds of an auction. Late bids of this sort are much less frequent in auctions that are automatically extended if a bid is submitted very late, as in auctions conducted on Amazon. We propose a model of second price internet auctions, in w...
